Showing your right to work in the UK
All new workers must provide evidence of their right to work in the UK.
We are required to check your right to work in the UK and confirm your identity before you start working for the University.
All new starters are provided with a link to provide information about your right to work and then book an appointment to have your document(s) and identity checked.
What documents do I need?
This depends on the work permission you hold, please see the relevant guidance below.
If your documents show different names to your known name, you will need to provide a document linking both names (eg marriage certificate, divorce decree or deed poll).

British and Irish citizens
- British or Irish passport. This can be current or expired, but expired passports must not be clipped or cancelled and you must be identifiable from the photograph. OR
- Birth Certificate / Adoption Certificate / Naturalisation Certificate plus proof of UK National Insurance Number on a document issued by either a previous employer (eg P45, P60, payslip) or a Government agency (eg NI number card or letter, tax statement).
Documents must be the physical, original document. We cannot accept scans or copies of documents.
Visa holders and settled workers

Share Code. People with a UKVI account can generate a share code (gov.uk)
If you are unable to generate a share code, you may be able to prove your right to work another way.
Additional information for Student Visa holders
Student visa holders have limited permission to work during term times, and therefore you must also provide:
- a signed and completed Student visa declaration form (PDF
, 221kb) - evidence of your academic term and vacation dates, which cover the full duration of your period of study in the UK.
Taught students
If you are a taught student, you must provide a document confirming the term and vacation dates covering your period of study. This may be a PDF of a term dates webpage or a letter detailing your term and vacation dates.
Research students
If you are a research student you must request a confirmation of study letter confirming your term and vacation dates.
