Athena SWAN Award

SPSW gained an Athena SWAN Bronze Award in October 2020

The Department of Social Policy and Social Work are delighted to hold an Athena Swan Bronze Award in recognition of our work to promote gender equality. The award demonstrates that the Department is strongly committed to support the progress and careers of both students and staff members according to gender equality principles.

Find out about the action plan that we committed to as part of our Athena Swan Bronze Award application: SPSW A Swan submission (PDF , 2,946kb).

The implementation of the plan lies with the Equality & Diversity Committee which oversees issues relating to gender equality among the many other issues around equality, diversity and inclusion. We are committed to an intersectional approach to equality and to addressing issues relating to all protected characteristics such as disability, ethnicity and sexuality.

In implementing our Action plan we are committed to achieving further concrete change focusing in particular on:

  • Career progression by female academic staff to the higher grades.
  • Job sustainability.
  • Culture, aimed at embedding equality and diversity into departmental norms and practices.
