The Student Recruitment team’s focus is to drive diversity and inclusion, engaging with key stakeholders to attract the best students to York. 

Student Recruitment is a dedicated team of professionals that provide advice, guidance and information, for prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students and their supporters. The team is here to help students with important decisions about their academic future, running a wide range of recruitment events to attract a diverse, bright and motivated student community. They are passionate about higher education and sharing the wonderful opportunities that the University of York offers.

Our team

Andrea Bourne 

Deputy Head of Student Recruitment 

Andrea leads the undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment teams, implementing strategic priorities and setting out goals and priorities to assure effective student recruitment across a busy annual calendar.

Emma McShane 

Student Recruitment Manager (UK Schools & Colleges Liaison)

Emma manages our schools and colleges liaison activity, building effective relationships with current and potential contacts, ensuring that they are aware of the help the University can give them to support their students on the journey to higher education. Emma organises large off-campus student recruitment events including UCAS conventions and UK Uni Search events. Emma is the lead on the academic skills and EPQ provision for UK schools and colleges organising annual virtual conferences.

Rachael Spink

Student Recruitment Manager (UG Events)

Rachael manages a range of recruitment events and activities, focusing primarily on the organisation of our Undergraduate Open Days and other on-campus events. Rachael works throughout the UK providing advice and guidance at school, college and UCAS events.

"A university Open Day is a fabulous way to get a real insight into what studying and living at a university is like. Most Open Days give the opportunity to explore more than just your course; social activities, accommodation, support services, etc. So make sure you book your place early to avoid missing out!"

Vicki Wray

Student Recruitment Manager (UK & Europe)

Vicki supports the undergraduate student recruitment team, visiting schools and colleges across the UK to advise about university study. Vicki also has regional responsibility for European recruitment so often spends time outside of the UK engaging with students across a variety of European countries. She also plans and manages UK Clearning Triage operations.

"Take the time to research your course and university prior to applying so you have a clearer idea of where and what you want to study. Visiting universities is a great way to imagine yourself at that university, so try and visit both the university and their surroundings!"

John Adamthwaite

Student Recruitment Manager (UG Events)

John manages a range of recruitment events and activities, focusing primarily on the organisation of our Undergraduate Visit Days and other on-campus events. John works throughout the UK providing advice and guidance at school, college and UCAS events.

"It’s okay not to know what subject you’d like to study when you visit us on our Open Days. You’ll be able to explore different subjects to see what’s right for you, and you might find something you hadn’t ever considered before."

Tom Murray

Student Recruitment Manager (Postgraduate) 

Tom works to help people thinking about pursuing postgraduate study identify the course they are interested in and take the steps needed to continue their academic journey at the University of York. He works with other members of the PG student recruitment team to organise events that put applicants in contact with staff at the University and to answer any questions that prospective students have about living in and studying at York. He also travels around the UK attending PG fairs, so look out for him on a campus near you!

"If you are thinking about doing a Masters by research or a PhD, use the York Research Database (pure.york.ac.uk) to find potential researchers and collaborators working in your field, read some of their work, and perhaps even get in touch with them."

Diar Davey-Rogerson

Student Recruitment Manager (Postgraduate)

Diar organises postgraduate recruitment events including our Postgraduate Open Days, allowing students to explore postgraduate study at York through a range of activities and talks. They also attend events throughout the UK promoting the University of York as a potential destination for postgraduate study.

"Start early. Give yourself the most time and flexibility to make any decision, whether that’s which university you want to study at or which modules you want to take. Remember, nothing is final; you can always change your mind later if you feel like you’ve made a mistake."

Jackie Finlayson

Student Recruitment Coordinator

Jackie supports the postgraduate student recruitment team on a range of events and activities. This includes assisting with arranging and hosting events,  PG Student Ambassadors, managing events sheets, financial records, PG SR emails and other online systems.

Laura Arundel 

Student Recruitment Officer (Undergraduate)

Laura supports our on campus recruitment events, focusing primarily on Campus Tours which are a great opportunity to have a student-led tour of our beautiful campus. Laura assists the online chat platform connecting prospective students with current students to answer any questions they may have about student life at The University of York. Laura also manages the Student Ambassador Scheme which employs current students to support and promote our recruitment activities.

"It's ok to find the process of choosing the right University a little overwhelming at times. Take your time, try to enjoy the start of this exciting new chapter in your lives, do plenty of research and don't be afraid to change your mind along the way. I would recommend booking a Campus Tour to see if you can imagine yourself in that place and then follow up with an Open Day to fully explore all aspects of student life."

Carl Ansari

Student Recruitment Coordinator

Carl works with schools and colleges across the UK to support undergraduate student recruitment. Carl represents the University of York at school and college visits as well as at major off-campus events including UCAS Conventions and UK Uni Search fairs; offering advice on courses, entry requirements and the student experience at York.

Bea Fraser

Student Recruitment Manager (UG Events)

Bea is currently seconded to Student Recruitment, focusing on recruitment events and activities. So far in her role Bea has lead on our 2025 Undergraduate Open Days and is currently working towards our upcoming undergraduate recruitment events. Alongside this Bea has also been visiting schools, colleges and HE fairs to promote the University to prospective students.

"Open Days are the best way to find out if York might be for you. It's a wonderful way to explore different courses, get specific advice, and find out more about where you might live and study for three or more years. I'd reccommend booking early and making sure you plan your day beforehand to make the most of everything the events have to offer."

Sophie Ritson

Student Recruitment Coordinator (Events)

Sophie visits schools and colleges across the UK to deliver talks and provide advice on the journey into higher education and university life, also speaking to young people at larger scale events, like UCAS Fairs and UK Uni Search events. Sophie also supports the delivery of recruitment events on campus, with specific responsibility for assisting with the organisation of the open days.

“Think about what you want from your course and your university experience. Ultimately, it’s going to be your experience, so you want it to be right for you. Making a priorities list or mindmap might help you get your ideas out of your brain. Why not go full 2000s chick flick and make a mood board!”

Elara Christie

Student Recruitment Coordinator

Elara helps coordinate a range of recruitment events and activities, focusing primarily on the organisation of our Undergraduate Visit Days. Elara also works throughout the UK providing advice and guidance at school, college and UCAS events.

Jennifer Osborne

Student Recruitment Coordinator

Jen works with schools and colleges across the UK to support undergraduate student recruitment. Jen represents the University of York at school and college visits as well as at major off-campus events including UCAS Conventions and UK Uni Search fairs; offering advice on courses, entry requirements and the student experience at York.

Student Recruitment Officer (UG Events)

Jamie assists in organising a range of recruitment events and activities, focusing primarily on the organisation of our Undergraduate Visit Days and Open Days. Jamie works throughout the UK providing advice and guidance at school, college and UCAS events.

"If you are unsure about the programme you want to study, look at their course pages and dig into the modules that make up the programme, if you find reading it boring, it might not be the course for you. If it sparks your interest then perhaps you are onto something. If you are anything like me, you’ll know if you're bored a few lines in.”

Will Joyce

Student Recruitment Coordinator (Undergraduate)

Will works closely with schools and colleges for the delivery of careers fairs and talks on applying to university, allowing students from across the country to engage with York from their home, as well as attending on campus events throughout the year. He also works alongside the Realising Opportunities programme, aimed at helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds reach higher education.

"Don't worry if you don't get the results you were looking for the first time round. There's great opportunities out there through Clearing, or you can always resit a year. Your whole life is ahead of you."

Chloe Chuck

Student Recruitment Coordinator

Chloe works with schools and colleges across the UK to support undergraduate student recruitment. Chloe represents the University of York at school and college visits as well as at major off-campus events including UCAS Conventions and UK Uni Search fairs; offering advice on courses, entry requirements and the student experience at York.
