SEI ranked number two among world's environment think tanks

Posted on 6 February 2014

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), which has a centre in the Environment Department at the University of York, has been ranked as the world’s second most influential environment think tank.

SEI has improved its position for the fourth year in a row in the latest Global Go To Think Tank Index, rising from sixth place in the previous year’s rankings.

The index is based on an assessment of more than 6,500 think tanks around the world, and is compiled annually by the University of Pennsylvania's Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program.

The Head of the Environment Department at York, Professor Colin Brown, said: “The University of York has had a long and mutually supportive relationship with the Stockholm Environment Institute. We are proud to be so closely associated with an organisation that, as these rankings illustrate, is at the forefront of ensuring environmental research can inform policy to help achieve sustainable development.”

SEI Executive Director Johan Kuylenstierna said: ”I am very pleased about SEI’s ranking in the Go To Think Tank Index, as this is a recognition of the high quality work done by all SEI colleagues around the world. But a key part of our success is the strong collaboration we have with hundreds of international science and policy partners globally – this is not something we could achieve alone!”

The Stockholm Environment Institute’s headquarters is in Stockholm, but it also has research centres in the UK, USA, Thailand, Kenya and Estonia, and is active in bridging science and policy worldwide.

This is the seventh edition of the Global Go To Think Tanks Report, described as “the insider guide to the global marketplace of ideas”. The report was launched on 22 January, 2014 at the United Nations University in New York.
