York alumni cross swords in political debate at Westminster

Posted on 9 March 2010

A panel of MPs, all of whom studied at the University of York, will cross swords in a political debate in the Palace of Westminster tomorrow.

The MPs, representing the three main parties, will be joined by two political journalists - also York alumni - in the debate in the Grand Committee Room at Westminster Hall.

The panel includes Conservative Paul Goodman, who graduated in English at York in 1981, Liberal Democrat Paul Holmes, who read History graduating in 1978 and Meg Munn, who studied Language and Linguistics and graduated in 1981.

They will be joined by journalist Steve Richards, of the The Independent, who studied History at York and also graduated in 1981.

The MC for the evening is political journalist Jonathan Isaby, who studied Language and Linguistics graduating in 1999. He organised the event.

It will have a Question Time format with the MPs answering questions from an audience made up of more than 100 members of the York Alumni Association London group.

Jonathan Isaby said: "With the general election expected to take place within two months, it's going to be a great opportunity to discuss the burning political issues of the day inside the Mother of Parliaments. And as the politicians prepare for the hustings in their constituencies, what better preparation could there be than to be put through their paces by their fellow York alumni?"
