Exploring the philosophy of organisms

Posted on 10 May 2010

The different philosophical approaches to the concept of the organism will be explored in a public lecture at the University of York.

Professor Catherine Wilson will consider why, in her view, biologists tend to think that "organism" is a term of art, while philosophers think it is an important fact about the world that it contains organisms.

In her lecture “The Concept of 'the Organism' in Philosophy of Biology”, Professor Wilson will side with biologists but discuss whether the philosophical approach has useful or misleading implications.

Professor Wilson is Regius Professor of Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The lecture, on Wednesday 12 May, is supported by the Royal Institute of Philosophy and is aimed at introducing philosophical issues in an accessible manner.

It will be held in Room L/N/002, Langwith College, starting at 4.30pm. Admission is free and open to all.
