Former Minister looks to Afghanistan's future

Posted on 22 November 2010

A former Cabinet Minister in Afghanistan will tomorrow examine the country's progress towards recovery and reconstruction in a lecture at the University of York.

Mohammed Haneef Atmar, who was Minister of the Interior until June 2010, is giving the El Hassan Bin Talal Lecture in Post-war Reconstruction and Development.

He will explore the barriers facing stabilisation and reconstruction in Afghanistan and suggest recommendations for future action. The lecture comes three days after NATO announced a timetable for withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

Mr Atmar started his career as an aid worker with Norwegian Church Aid and, in 2002, was invited to join the Transitional Administration in Afghanistan. Mr Atmar has been a key political figure, and a member of President Karzai's cabinet until June 2010. As well as Minister of the Interior, Mr Atmar has also been Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development and Minister of Education.

He is also an alumnus of the University of York. He was part of the first intake of the MA in Post-War Recovery Studies at York in 1996, and graduated with a distinction.

This is the third annual lecture in a series launched in 2008 by Prince El Hassan Bin Talal of Jordan and hosted by the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit, which is part of the University's Department of Politics.

The public lecture takes place in Room P/X001 in the Department of Physics at 6.45pm on Tuesday 23 November 2010. Admission is by free ticket only by calling 01904 322622 or from www.york.ac.uk/tickets, or publiclectures@york.ac.uk.
