The future of civic engagement debated at York

Posted on 16 June 2010

Experts will discuss how young people are encouraged to engage with civil society in the 21st Century in a seminar at the University of York.

The event, hosted by the University and the Society for Educational Studies, will examine how civic engagement and citizenship education is changing with the growing use of technology and an increasing focus on community-based action.

Speakers will include Professor Stephen Coleman, from the University of Leeds, on the way citizenship is promoted through the mass media and Professor David Kerr, from the National Foundation for Educational Research, on the latest research findings into civic engagement in and beyond schools.

Professor Ian Davies, from the Department of Educational Studies and Honorary Treasurer of the Society for Educational Studies, said: “Civic engagement and citizenship education are vitally important areas for research and in teachers’ professional development.

“This seminar will bring together researchers and practitioners to consider the latest thinking in this area and exchange ideas.”

The seminar will be held at the National Science Learning Centre, on the University campus, on Friday 18 June. A small number of places are still available and can be secured by contacting Yvonne Mason at ym516@york.ac.uk.
