Women doctors promote mentoring in national conference

Posted on 9 November 1999

The use of mentoring in clinical governance will be highlighted at a major conference in York next Friday (November 12). Organised by a group of women doctors, together with the University of York, the conference's keynote speaker will be the Government's Chief Medical Officer Professor Liam Donaldson.

Professor Donaldson's keynote address 'Clinical governance in the National Health Service' will be one of a range of talks and workshops looking at what mentoring is, how it is used in medicine and dentistry, and different ways in which mentoring works in the NHS.

The conference at the Viking Moat House Hotel aims to give delegates a better understanding of the pressures on doctors responsible for clinical quality. Workshops will cover the use and impact of mentoring in primary and secondary care in medicine and dentistry, what mentoring is, and the different models of mentoring used in the NHS.

Invited delegates will range from nurses, doctors, dentists, and those teaching medical studies. Workshop leaders include Dr Tamara Madej, consultant anaesthetist at York District Hospital, Julia Pokora, and independent occupational psychologist, Dr Dinah Roy, GP in Spennymoor, and David Jacobs, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the University Dental Hospital in Newcastle.
