Researchers broaden expertise in traffic management solutions

Posted on 2 February 1998

A new link with industry has been forged by researchers into traffic management at the University of York.

Ian Routledge, an independent York-based consultant specialising in traffic control and urban traffic management, has been appointed part-time Researcg Fellow in the Department of Mathematics. He will work closely with the Department's Network Control Group.

The primary focus of the York Network Control Group is to develop solutions to current transport problems. The mathematical expertise available in the group offers new perspectives. Ian Routledge offers twenty five years of practical experience in design, implementation and operation of transport systems such as traffic signals, information systems and tolling systems, as well as improved links to suppliers and local government.

"The combination of mathematical skills and practical experience offers a unique opportunity to further the work of the Group and develop innovative and effective solutions to transport problems," said Mike Smith, leader of the Group.

Notes to editors:

The members of the York network Control Group are:
  • Mike Smith, mathematician and leading researcher in transport policy;
  • Mustapha Ghali, engineer with expertise in transportation modelling;
  • Yanling Xiang, engineer with computing and mathematical expertise;
  • Richard Clegg, physicist with expertise in the development of micro simulation models;
  • Janet Clegg, mathematician with expertise in optimisation;
  • Arthur Clune, mathematician with expertise in software and simulation.
