Leading tenor takes up appointment at York

Posted on 16 September 1998

John Potter, the tenor of the Hilliard ensemble joins the Music department at the University of York as lecturer this October. He will combine his University post with professional singing engagements with the Hilliard.

Best known for his performances of Renaissance and Baroque music, John Potter has made over 100 recordings. The Hilliard's album Officium is currently the best-selling early music record of all time. But he is also very much involved in contemporary music. Many composers have written works for him, and he has premiered works by Berio, Stockhausen and others. He was a member of Swingle II and a co-founder of Electric Phoenix, and has been with the Hilliard Ensemble since 1984.

He is the editor of the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to Singing, an anthology of writings on all aspects of singing from opera to rap, and his book Vocal Authority, has just been published by Cambridge University Press.

"John's arrival will open up a new area of performance studies," said Nicola LeFanu, Head of Music. "Performance is key to what we do at York, and having a professional performer who is so much in the public eye will be very valuable to our students."

Notes to editors:

  • The Music department at York has a strong emphasis on performance and composition. Many former students and current staff are professional performers and composers.
