£3.3m in new research grants

Posted on 17 July 1998

New research grants worth £3,273,921 were announced at the meeting of Council at the University of York on 16 July.

New grants include:

  • £17,930 from English Heritage for the identification of Saxon geese bones from their ancient DNA. The grant holder is Dr Keith Dobney in the Environmental Archaeology Unit.
  • £14,990 from the Leverhulme Trust for the study of the characterisation of a novel gene implicated in bone diseases. The grant holder is Professor Tim Skerry in the Department of Biology.
  • £361,586 from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council to study the UK sub-auroral magnetometer networth (SAMNET). The SAMNET array consisting of nine magnetic observatories in Northern Europe is operated by the University of York as a national facility. The measurements allow researchers to monitor the Earth's space environment and to study the way the solar wind causes electric currents to flow in the upper atmosphere.

More research grants will be announced in November.
