York launches Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies
Posted on Thursday 25 June 1998
The centre is an interdisciplinary grouping of 30 scholars drawn from the departments and research groups of Archaeology, Economic History, English, Heritage Studies, History, History of Art and Philosophy. Their brief is to advance postgraduate studies and research in the history and culture of the 'long' eighteenth century (1650-1850) in Briatin, France and elsewhere.
The Centre has established its own interdisciplinary MA programme and provides the base for doctoral students writing these on the period. The first of a wide range of staff research projects focuses on notions of privacy and private life in the eighteenth century.
"We have attracted students from all over the world to our new mA and DPhil programmes," said professor John Barrell, Co-Director of the Centre. "The Centre has modern IT facilities, growing research collections and an unrivalled scholarly ambience."
