University of York and British Library become Associated Institutions

Posted on 5 May 1998

The University of York and the British Library on 5 May signed a Memorandum of Association, signalling their intention to work more closely together on collaborative research and improved access to information for users.

The two institutions wish to take advantage of the close proximity between the University and the British Library's site at Boston Spa. Each institution has appointed a co-ordinator for the development and management of joint activities who are Elizabeth Heaps, Acting Librarian, at the University, and Malcolm Smith, Director, at the British Library. There will be a forum for joint strategic planning and more coherent provision of information.

"This agreement formalises several years of excellent collaboration between two leading research institutions who are also close neighbours," said Professor Ron Cooke, Vice-Chancellor of the University of York. "The British Library is an incomparable national resource. We look forward to working together for our mutual advantage."

David Russon, Deputy Chief Executive of the British Library, said: "We hope through this agreement to strengthen our support for research at the University of York and develop new ways in which, as a Library, we can help this and other universities."

Elizabeth Heaps commented: "We are delighted to strengthen our links with the British Library and are looking forward to developing new projects together."
