Quiet Place announces first book club read

Posted on 1 March 2018

The Quiet Place Book Club has announced Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche as the first book club read for March.

Americanah is a prime example of the contemporary global novel

The York Festival of Ideas, in partnership with the University of York’s Department of English and Related Literature, hosts a virtual book club named after the Quiet Place on the University’s Campus West.

The Quiet Place Book Club invites members of the public, staff, students and graduates to join their reading group on Instagram, where they will read and discuss one nominated book a month.

Americanah tells the story of Ifemelu and Obinze as they depart Nigeria for lives in America and London.  It questions ideas of global culture, black and African feminism, race relations and political identities.

Global novel

Dr Alexandra Kingstron-Reese, who is teaching Americanah to first year English and Related Literature students, said: “It is a fascinating example of the contemporary global novel.  Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a powerful writer, so we are excited to explore the depths of this novel in the coming weeks and discuss her representation of culture, race, women, and politics.”

Books in the book club are related to areas of teaching and research in the Department of English and Related Literature, across all genres and age-ranges, as well as literary events at the York Festival of Ideas 2018.
