One Planet Week event

Hosted by York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI)

Join YESI for a screening of the 2019 Global Documentary film ‘The Race is On: Secrets and Solutions of Climate’, followed by Q&A with the film’s presenter and producer Dr James Dyke, and a panel discussion with leading experts around the challenges and solutions to climate change in a city like York.

Raging wildfires that have destroyed communities and ecosystems from the Artic to Australia shows that climate climate is happening now. Time is running out for humanity to avoid potentially disastrous global heating. This film exposes the shocking assumptions that lie at the heart of all governments' plans to avoid climate breakdown. With contributions from experts and change makers, it shows how humanity can rise to the challenge, and ensure a flourishing future.

This Global Documentary was born out of the idea that if we want to solve the climate crisis, then it is necessary firstly to communicate the forces at play, and then to show that better ideas do exist. Their aim is to tell the climate story in a way that people can easily understand, and in so doing help shape our global community and help build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

Panel members include:

  • James Dyke- Senior Lecturer Global Systems, University of Exeter
  • Steve Cinderby- Senior Researcher, Stockholm Environment Institute York
  • Katie Privett- Low Carbon Officer, North Yorkshire & East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership
  • Kate Lock- Communications and Policy Officer, Place-Based Climate Action Network/Leeds Climate Commission (Based at the University of Leeds)
