Event details

The Centre for Women's Studies Annual Lecture

This talk will discuss some key debates in feminist and queer film studies from the 1980s to the present day, engaging with queer, feminist, and sci-fi films covered in Prof. Stacey's scholarship, from All About Eve and Alien Resurrection to Teknolust and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The talk will explore how it used to be almost impossible for homoerotic desire between women on the screen to be acknowledged within feminist film criticism; it will then move on to consider same-sex desire in films about cloning and genetic engineering, pausing the performances of Sigourney Weaver and Tilda Swinton in particular. Finally, it will address the question of lesbian films without lesbians by way of conclusion.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception.
