York Society of Engineers Lecture

VPI is one of the leading power companies in the UK, Ireland, and Germany. Its portfolio includes reliable thermal power and battery storage across seven sites in the UK and Ireland. They are already one of the largest power generators in the UK and the largest battery storage operator in Ireland. They have two projects under construction and more in development. VPI are also preparing for the future with ‘first of a kind’ projects like Humber Zero – the world’s largest retrofit post-combustion carbon capture projects. Designed to capture 3.3 MTPA of CO2, this project will meet nearly 20% of the UK government’s 2030 targets once constructed.

The Humber Zero post-combustion carbon capture project will breathe new life into the Immingham CHP, decarbonising not just the grid but also neighbouring refineries and potentially other industrial customers. Over the course of the evening, Jessica will explain how the project started, where it is at now, dive into some of the challenges that have been overcome, and share the next steps that VPI are taking to enable first capture by 2030.
