Event details

Our vision is a future where no one loses their sight due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50 in the UK. Despite its widespread impact, there is currently no national screening programme for AMD - unlike other successful national health initiatives. This has implications for early detection, timely treatment, and healthcare equity.

We invite you to a free, one-hour lecture where Professor Richard Gale, an internationally recognised expert in ophthalmology, will discuss AMD research at the University of York and Hull York Medical School. This lecture will also mark the launch of the “Anna the Eye Scanner” Appeal - a new fundraising initiative by the Yorkshire Macular Degeneration Fund, focused on improving early diagnosis and treatment options for those affected by AMD.

About the speaker

Richard Gale is Professor of Ophthalmology at Hull York Medical School, University of York. He is also Honorary Consultant Medical Ophthalmologist at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is an internationally renowned expert in medical diseases of the retina, specialising in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

As a clinician and senior researcher, Richard’s ultimate goal is to enhance the quality of life for those affected by AMD through research that translates into impactful clinical practices. He is also spearheading the Yorkshire Macular Degeneration Fund, a charitable initiative dedicated to improving diagnosis and treatment for AMD, york.ac.uk/amdfund
