In this talk Professor Sarah Brown will describe the conservation of the St Cuthbert window in York Minster. This is one of three great windows creating a triptych of glass in the eastern arm of the Minster, and has been the subject of recent doctoral research by Dr Katie Harrison at the University of York. The conservation of the glass by the York Glaziers Trust is beginning to reveal new insights into its technical artistry, including the use of glass 'jewels', first described in a treatise written in the 12th century. The conservation of the south-east transept also involves the conservation of two far less well-known windows, the adjoining depictions of St William of York and Archbishop Richard Scrope, bringing three of the most revered figures of northern sanctity into the workshop for the first time.
Professor Sarah Brown
Sarah Brown is director of the York Glaziers Trust, charged with the care and conservation of York Minster's outstanding collection of stained glass. She led the team responsible for the conservation of the Great East Window. She is also director of the University of York's internationally acclaimed MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management.
