Turnitin and Gradescope

Turnitin and Gradescope are cloud based platforms that integrate with Learn VLE (Blackboard).

These tools enable students to submit their work online for assessments. Staff can use them to mark assignments, give feedback, and release results to students.

Key features

  • Students can submit assessments anonymously and non-anonymously.
  • Submissions are date and time-stamped.
  • Checks for plagiarism by comparing the submission against a wide range of sources. (Turnitin compares text, whereas Gradescope compares code.)
  • Staff can share assignment marks and online written feedback with students.
  • Analytics are available to system administrators and marking staff (eg score average).
  • Administration features, including export marks and release feedback for the whole cohort.

Additional information

Permissions for setting up submissions

Depending on which tool your department uses, Turnitin and Gradescope submission points can be created in Learn VLE.

Gradescope is not enabled for all departments. Learn about the differences between Turnitin and Gradescope.

To set up a submission point, staff need to be enrolled on the Learn VLE site with a role that allows this (eg instructor).

Students can submit files if:

  • they are enrolled on a VLE site with a Turnitin or Gradescope submission point and have the ‘Student’ role
  • staff have made both the VLE site and submission point ‘available’ to students.
