Entrepreneurial journeys: Hannah Kay & Marius Matulevicius

The Recharge Hub, founded by Hannah Kay and Marius Matulevicius, is York’s first community-focused wellness facility combining fitness, recovery, and mental wellbeing under one roof. With services ranging from strength training, yoga, and Hyrox preparation to recovery treatments like sauna, ice baths, and red light therapy, The Recharge Hub makes wellness both accessible and affordable.

Hannah’s Journey

Hannah graduated from Addict Dance Academy in 2021 with a BA (Hons) in Dance Performance. While she began her career in dance and fitness, she soon discovered her real passion lay in personal coaching and creating spaces that supported people’s overall wellbeing.

She built her experience as a personal trainer and small group coach before co-founding The Recharge Hub. Alongside this, Hannah also runs EMPOWER, a series of events and retreats that use journaling, breathwork, movement, and creativity to help women connect more deeply with themselves and with others.

For Hannah, the journey has been about more than fitness, it has been about redefining what wellness means and showing that looking after mind and body can be simple, affordable, and community-driven.

Marius’ Journey

Before co-founding The Recharge Hub, Marius Matulevicius worked for 10 years as a professional chef. Although he thrived on the creativity of cooking, the lifestyle took a toll on his health. Fitness became his turning point, restoring his energy, confidence, and sense of purpose.

Marius retrained as a personal trainer and built a thriving coaching business. He also launched IF Supplements, gaining valuable experience in entrepreneurship. Together with Hannah, he envisioned a facility that went beyond a typical gym, a place where people could train, recover, and connect. That vision became The Recharge Hub.

Achievements and Milestones

Since opening, The Recharge Hub has established itself as a unique wellness space in York, blending training, recovery, and community. It is an official Hyrox and Total Warrior affiliate, giving members opportunities to prepare for large-scale endurance and fitness events.

The Hub has developed a consistent base of members, hosts regular community events, and is steadily raising awareness across York. It has also introduced a welcoming café space serving coffee and protein shakes, adding to its community feel.

Challenges

For Hannah, the biggest challenge has been balancing ambition with limited resources, from renovating the space themselves to managing finances while ensuring a high-quality service. Imposter syndrome also posed a personal challenge, but focusing on community impact helped overcome it.

For Marius, the toughest hurdle has been keeping wellness affordable despite the high costs of running a facility. To stay true to their mission, they adopted a pay-as-you-go model, built community partnerships, and diversified their services to spread financial risk.

Both co-founders agree that resilience, consistency, and learning to adapt step by step have been key to overcoming obstacles.

Business Role Models

Both Hannah and Marius are inspired by purpose-driven entrepreneurs who put community before profit. For Hannah, role models are those who stay rooted in their values and build businesses that create real impact while keeping the journey enjoyable. For Marius, independent local business owners who model community-first thinking have been a major influence.

Words of advice

Hannah’s advice: “It’s okay not to have everything figured out before you start. Progress comes from taking imperfect action and learning along the way.”

Marius’s advice: “Build systems early. Doing everything yourself might work at the start, but processes make growth smoother and prevent burnout. And never be afraid to ask for help.”

The Future of The Recharge Hub

The Recharge Hub is in an early growth stage, with strong foundations and a loyal community. The next steps include expanding services, strengthening partnerships, and raising awareness within the wider York community. Education is also central to their mission, helping people understand that true wellness is a balance of fitness, recovery, and mental health.

By combining their experiences, Hannah and Marius are building more than a gym, they are creating a lifestyle hub for wellness, resilience, and community.
