Entrepreneurial journeys: Rebecca Hargreaves

Rebecca Hargreaves is the founder of York Podiatry, an award-winning healthcare practice celebrating 20 years of helping people stay healthy, active, and confident.   What began as a single rented room in a GP surgery has grown into two thriving clinics in York and Selby, employing a 14-strong all-female team united by shared values of compassion, professionalism, and care.

Rebecca’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2005, when she opened her first podiatry clinic in York while pregnant with her first child. It was a leap of faith that demanded resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering belief in her vision.

Over the past two decades, she has navigated every high and low of running a healthcare business - from contracting to the NHS and scaling operations, to leading through the Covid-19 pandemic as an independent provider. In 2024, York Podiatry reached a major milestone, uniting its two York sites into a state-of-the-art, purpose-built practice — a physical symbol of the team’s growth, collaboration, and commitment to excellence.

Today, York Podiatry operates across York and Selby, offering professional, compassionate podiatry care for all ages. The practice focuses on helping people stay mobile, confident, and pain-free while fostering a culture of learning and teamwork.

Rebecca is particularly proud of the clinic’s commitment to staff development, supporting administrative apprentices and celebrating the practice’s first Podiatry degree apprentice this year - a step toward nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Professional leadership and inspiration

As both a business owner and clinician, Rebecca plays an active leadership role within her profession through The Royal College of Podiatry. She currently serves as Chair of the North Yorkshire Branch, representing independent practitioners locally, and is also an elected national member and Vice Chair of the College’s Independent practice Group.

Through these roles, she helps shape the future of podiatry, championing high standards, collaboration, and recognition for independent practitioners.

Rebecca draws inspiration from role models who embody determination and authenticity. “I consider Sara Davies to be one of my inspirational role models. As a self-made businesswoman, she founded her business from her student bedroom - which happened to be in York. She’s a true champion for women in business and is down-to-earth and relatable, often sharing honestly about the challenges of balancing business and family life.”

“Within my profession, Troy Parsons is also a huge inspiration. He co-founded The Hive, a mentoring group for healthcare professionals from which I’ve benefited greatly. Troy began, like me, with a single-chair podiatry practice and now runs a multi-million-dollar, highly respected clinic in Toowoomba, Queensland.”

York Podiatry’s excellence has been recognised with multiple industry awards, including being named a regional finalist in the FSB Small Business of the Year Awards 2023. Personally, Rebecca has also benefited from leadership programmes such as Help to Grow, Women’s Leadership Circle, and professional coaching and counselling, all of which have enhanced her ability to lead with vision, clarity, and confidence.

Overcoming challenges and business growth

Running a business through major life transitions - including pregnancy, parenthood, and the pandemic has tested Rebecca’s adaptability and resolve. But her focus on people and purpose has always guided her through. “When you lead with your values and put people first,” she says, “you always find a way to rebuild stronger.”

Now celebrating two decades in business, York Podiatry stands as a trusted name in community healthcare - a team built on shared values and mutual support. For Rebecca, success means more than expansion; it’s about culture, connection, and the confidence of knowing that her practice makes a meaningful difference every day.

Words of advice

“Running your own business isn’t easy and as a woman, the juggle can feel even heavier at times. But it’s one of the most rewarding journeys you can take.  Believe in your values. Invest in yourself. Reach out to others. And build a team that lifts each other up - because culture is everything.”
