Partners of Tohoku-York-Kaiserslautern Core-to-Core project on "New-Concept Spintronics Devices"

Tohoku University

Tohoku University founded in 1907 is a Japanese National University in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. Since its establishment, Tohoku University has continued to offer students a world-class education, and to succeed in conducting pioneering research in various fields. Tohoku University has always been in the forefront to spintronics research, and has the capability to design, synthesis, fabricate, and characterize the spintronics materials and devices, and integrate them with CMOS integrated circuits.

University of York

The University of York is a research-intensive plate glass university located in the city of York, England. Established in 1963, the campus university has expanded to more than thirty departments and centres, covering a wide range of subjects. York has been named the 7th best university under 50 years old in the world (and 1st within the UK), building a "reputation to rival Oxford and Cambridge". The Magnetic Materials Research Group in the Physics and Electronics Departments at UoY is probably Britain's largest group working in the field of advanced nano-magnetism. The group has specialised in the field of spintronics, magnetic modelling and magnetisation reversal studies in complex materials. The Spintronics and Nanodevice Lab in the Department of Electronics at UoY investigate novel materials, new devices and fabrication techniques for spintronics - a rapidly expanding field of microelectronics and nanoelectronics.

Technical University of Kaiserslautern

The University of Kaiserslautern was founded on 13 July 1970. Earlier it was part of the twin University Trier/Kaiserslautern. In the winter semester 1970/1971 student and scientific activities started with the matriculation of 191 new students the faculties in Mathematics, Physics and Technology. In 1972 the set-up of the faculties Chemistry and Biology gave a boost to the extension of a scientifically specialized structure. At the same time the faculty of Technology was split into the faculties Mechanical Engineering and Electrotechnology, Architecture/Regional and Environmental Planning/Educational Sciences.

Spintec

SPINTEC is one of the leading spintronics research laboratories in the world, positioned at the crossroads of science and technology. It is hosted on the MINATEC campus in Grenoble, which is located in the French Alps and surrounded by an exceptional natural environment. It is also an extremely rich ecosystem formed by public research organisations (CEA, CNRS, ESRF, ILL), the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA) and the Graduate schools of Engineering and Management (GINP), as well as numerous high-tech companies. SPINTEC’s mission is to act as a bridge between academic research and technological applications in the field of spintronics, which is both a very rich source of new condensed-matter-magnetism physics, and recognized today as one of the major innovation routes for future microelectronics industries, sensing technology and bio-applications. The research activity of SPINTEC covers the whole spectrum from theory to demonstrators, including the development of innovative functional materials, the experimental validation of novel concepts in physics, up to the realization of test structures. Academic research concerns spinorbitronics, spintronics in 2D materials, microwave components, antiferromagnetic spintronics, and exotic spin textures. The application-oriented topics are: magnetic random access memories, artificial intelligence, design of spin based integrated circuits, sensors, biotechnology.

University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is part of the prestigious Russell Group of universities and highly respected across the globe as a centre of teaching excellence and research innovation and discovery. With 25 Nobel Prize winners among our current and former staff and students, we have a history of world firsts, with our impact ranging from splitting the atom to giving the world graphene. We are ranked 38th in the world and sixth in the UK in the 2022 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. Our outstanding facilities and wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD courses make us one of the most popular universities with students in the UK and internationally. We’re proud to have the largest alumni community of any campus-based university in the UK, with more than 500,000 graduates in more than 190 countries around the world.

University of Leeds

The University of Leeds, established in 1904, is one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK. The University is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, and has been  awarded the Queen’s Anniversary prize, the country’s highest accolade for an academic institution, in 2009, 2011 and 2021. We have more than 39,800 students including more than 37,400 full time, 2,400 part time, 28,600 undergraduates and 11,200 postgraduates, including 14,400 international and exchange students from 137 countries. We have 9,200 staff from more than 100 different countries. We contribute £1.3 billion every year to the UK economy – students add close to £200m of international revenue into the City Region each year.
