About the Department of Electronic Engineering

The department was founded in 1978, and admitted its first undergraduate students in 1979, when it had seven members of staff and thirteen students on one degree programme.

The department has since grown to be a community of over seventy full-time staff and over four hundred students on a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, specialising in subjects from avionics to nanotechology.

We have been consistently ranked amongst the best electronics departments in the country for teaching quality, and have established world-leading research groups in Electromagnetic Compatibility, Biologically-Inspired Computing, Music Technology, Wireless Communications and Nanotechnology.
