CEEM funding allowed us to explore a proof-of-concept technology in collaboration with expertise at York. The project was successful and will be the basis of future collaborative work.

Under the solar technologies theme, support has been provided by CEEM to fund an undergraduate project to explore proof-of-concept materials to selectively block solar energy comprising harmful wavelengths.

York provided synthetic expertise and access to materials characterisation facilities including structural (SEM, PXRD) and spectroscopic (UV-Vis, TRPL) instrumentation.

Connor Murrill, an undergraduate student from the University’s Department of Chemistry, worked with Croda on the development of sunscreen technology

Dr Richard Douthwaite from the University’s Department of Chemistry said: “Croda approached the university to explore proof-of-concept technologies for sunscreen additives.

“The funding from CEEM helped to initiate a new collaboration with Croda to explore a real world problem and provide very valuable research experience for one of our undergraduates.”

Connor Murrill, undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry at  York said: “I very much enjoyed the opportunity to use some of my chemical knowledge to investigate an applied research problem.”
