About the speaker

Professor Susan Wyllie is Chair of Biochemical Pharmacology in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. She leads the Mode of Action Group, working within the Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research, with over fifteen years of experience in kinetoplastid biology - the study of parasitic protozoa including causative agents of neglected tropical diseases.

Her research focuses on discovering how drugs act on these parasites, and how resistance develops. She employs a combination of genomics, chemical proteomics, and cell biology to identify molecular targets of phenotypically active compounds, develops genetic and cell biology tools, functionally characterises novel drug targets, and establishes novel cell-based assays to exploit high-value targets.

Among her recognitions, she received the Innovator of the Year award in 2022, was promoted to a Personal Chair (Professor) in the 2023-24 review, and in 2023 won the C.A. Wright Memorial Medal. She is also part of the team awarded DNDi (Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative) Project of the Year 2024 for her work in pre-clinical research.
