Department of Archaeology maintains its place in the world top 50 and maintains its place at 5th in the UK.

Archaeology in the world top 50 again.

This week the Department confirmed its place among the world's most highly regarded departments for the subject of Archaeology. The Department maintains its place as 5th in the UK and is ranked 18th in the world in the QS rankings.

Published annually since 2011, the QS World University rankings by subject highlight the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas. In 2022, QS ranked 1,543 institutions in total across 51 subjects in 5 subject areas. Universities are scored according to academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact (number of citations per year).

In total, nine subjects at the University were ranked in the world top 100: Archaeology (18th), Education (71st), English Language and Literature (28th), History (top 100), Linguistics (91st), Philosophy (top 100), Psychology (77th), Social Policy and Administration (29th), and Sociology (83rd).

Within the UK, four subjects are in the top 10 - Archaeology (5th), English Language and Literature (8th), Linguistics (10th), and Social Policy and Administration (6th).
