Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships 2023: Invitations for expressions of interest

The Department of Archaeology at York is seeking expressions of interest from eligible early career applicants who wish to be considered for support to submit a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at York.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships are aimed at early career researchers, with a research record but who have not yet held a full-time permanent academic post to undertake a significant piece of publishable work. The Fellowships are intended to assist those at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, and it is hoped that the appointment would lead to a more permanent position for the individual, either at York or another institution.

Fellowships are normally tenable for three years on a full-time basis, but requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period will be considered if this is appropriate for the nature of the research proposed and the career development of the individual.

Fellowships will commence between 1 September 2023 and 1 May 2024.

These fellowships provide three years of full-time salary and £6,000 p/a research expenses (up to £18,000) over three years.

Applicants should propose research which aligns with the Department's research priorities and should contact staff members in the department to act as their mentor and assist them with the preparation of their application.

Expression of interest

In order to submit an expression of interest applicants will be asked to prepare the following documents to be submitted to archaeology-research-support@york.ac.uk:

  • A 2-page CV
  • A detailed statement of proposed research
    • This should include aims, objectives, methodology and outcome (e.g. publication plans). It should enable the Department's review panel to form an estimate of the scope and importance of your proposal. The methodology should be clear and explicit, comprehensible to a non-expert. Include any bibliographic references in full, including page numbers where relevant. This statement and the bibliographic references may not exceed two sides of A4.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 5pm, 31 October 2022.

For full details of the scheme and eligibility criteria, please see the Leverhulme Trust's call information.

Applicants should ensure they meet the eligibility criteria before contacting prospective mentors.
