The Swahili World wins SAfA Book Prize
Volume edited by Stephanie Wynne-Jones honoured with award from the Society for Africanist Archaeologists The Society for Africanist Archaeologists this week awarded their 2021 Book Prize (edited volume) to 'The Swahili World', a major synthesis of the archaeology, anthropology and history of Africa's Indian Ocean coast.
The Swahili World is part of the prestigious Routledge Worlds series and is edited by Stephanie Wynne-Jones (York) and Adria LaViolette (Virginia). The volume comprises 56 chapters on topics ranging across time and space, producing the 'most nuanced and detailed consideration of Swahili language, culture and history ever produced' (Routledge
Worlds). It was praised by the judges as a 'very impressive compilation of papers, that embraces different perspectives' (SAfA book prize judges 2021). The SAfA Book Prize is awarded every two years at the SAfA Biennial Meeting to a book which makes an exceptional contribution to knowledge.
