‘Whispers from the Stalls’: Janine Buckley's study of Yorkshire country house stables wins SPMA Dissertation Prize

MA Archaeology of Buildings student Janine Buckley has been awarded the Society for Post Medieval Archaeology's annual Dissertation Prize for her study of country house stables. Bringing together her understanding of horses and historic buildings, Janine developed a new approach to the analysis of county house stables as places not only of status and show, but also restraint and confinement, identifying evidence for changing attitudes to control but also giving voice to animal agency and resistance in an exciting approach which sets an agenda for further studies. Janine is now Historic Environment Officer (Buildings) for Nottinghamshire County Council and is the latest in a long line of York students to have been awarded the prize.
