Caitlin Kitchener Wins HRC Doctoral Fellowship First Prize

Last week York PhD student Caitlin Kitchener received the first prize in the Humanities Research Centre Doctoral Fellowship competition. Caitlin presented research on the material and gendered experiences of the female reformers during 1819 in conjunction with the Peterloo Massacre.

Caitlin focused on how the reformers were perceived by outsiders (in this case the press) and how they wanted their identities to be read. This tension creates a female masculinity: the female reformers were attempting to create a feminine radicalism whilst outsiders viewed them as political trespassers in masculine spaces.
