University of York undergraduate scholarships and bursaries for UK and EU students 2012/13

The University of York scholarships and bursaries range in value from £2,000 per year to £8,500 per year.

The University of York is offering a range of scholarships and bursaries to UK and EU undergraduates in 2012/13, including:

  • National Scholarship Programme at York
  • York Bursary
  • Foundation Year Bursary
  • Care Leavers and Foyer Bursary
  • Support for students on a sandwich year or Erasmus year abroad

In any one year a student will only be eligible for one of these scholarship and bursary packages.

National Scholarship Programme at York

The University will be offering 171 scholarships of £4,500 through the National Scholarship Programme at York, funded equally by the Government and the University.  We estimate that across the University as a whole, between 20% and 30% of eligible entrants will be awarded a scholarship. 

We are required to allocate all National Scholarship Programme at York awards by the end of September.  This means that students wishing to be considered for the award must have their assessment for financial support from Student Finance England completed by the 30th August 2012.

Value of Scholarship

Holders of the National Scholarship Programme at York scholarships will receive £4,500 in the first year of the course, offset against University tuition fees and accomodation fees.

In subsequent years, scholarship holders whose residual household income remains at £25,000 or less will receive a York Bursary worth £2,000.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for consideration for an award, you must:

  • be ordinarily resident in England;
  • have a residual household income of less than or equal to £25,000;
  • have applied for income assessed support (Maintenance Loan or Grant), so that we see your household income.

Applying

There is no application form for the National Scholarship Programme at York. We will determine your eligibility based on the financial information we receive from the Student Loans Company.

It is vital that you request a means-tested assessment from the Student Loans Company in order to be consider for the National Scholarship Programme at York even if you do not expect to receive the means-tested student support for reasons such as previous study.

We will contact students who have been selected for the scholarship before the end of September 2012 to advise them of the decision.

Please note that if you or your parents withhold your consent to share financial information on your Student Loans application, we will not be able to confirm your eligibility for a National Scholarship Programme at York award. 

Allocation

Each academic department will have a number of awards to allocate.

In determining the allocation of awards, departments will consider:

  • academic merit, as evidenced by entry qualifications and other information gathered during the application process.

We will prioritise students from disadvantaged backgrounds, in accordance with the University's Access Agreement objectives.

York Bursary

 For undergraduate students starting in 2012, there will be an income-assessed package of fee waivers and accommodation bursaries.

EU and Social Work students are only eligible for the fee waiver element of the York Bursary award.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the York Bursary, you must:

  • be a UK or EU resident
  • have a residual household income of £25,000 or less;
  • be studying full-time at the University in 2012/13.*
  • Please note: EU and Social Work students will only be eligible for the fee waiver element of the York Bursary award

Cut off date for awards: 31st July 2013

* York Bursaries are not available to students on whole-year placements in industry or study abroad.

Applying

There is no application form for the York Bursary. We will determine your eligibility based on the financial information we receive from the Student Loans Company.

Foundation Year Bursary

UK and EU students on the foundation year (Year 0) of an extended degree programme starting after 1st September 2012 will be entitled to a Foundation Year Bursary.  

There is no application process we will determine your eligibility based on the financial information we receive from the Student Loans Company.  It is vital that you request a means-tested assessment form the Student Loans Company in order to be considered for a bursary - even if you do not expect to receive means-tested support for reasons such as previous study or being an EU student.

Care Leavers and Foyer Bursary

Student choice: all fee waiver or £2,500 fee waiver and £2,000 cash.

We are offering a package of support to young students (aged 25 or under) who come to York having been in the care of their UK local authority or who have come through the national Foyer Federation.

The package is available for each year of full-time study for the duration of the course, reduced by 50% for full-year sandwich placements or study abroad years.

Sandwich years

Students who commence their studies in 2012/13 and later take a whole year abroad (non-compulsory Erasmus) or complete a placement year will be charged £3,100 tuition fees and be eligible for a £1,100 bursary.  The bursary can be taken as a full fee waiver or a cash payment direct to the student.

EU students are eligible for the fee waiver element only.
