Academic pressures

Studying can be hard work and is an emotional process, but there are things you can do to manage your stress and avoid burnout.

Myths exposed
Getting a degree is not easy.
Despite what you might think, everyone else is not achieving without effort.
You are not alone in feeling under pressure.
You are not weak if you ask for help.

How can I help myself?

Studying is a process and not everything will be perfect. Remember:

  • people are marking your work, not whether you are a good person;
  • working harder in an attempt to reduce pressure can be counter-productive;
  • you can avoid patterns of behaviour that perpetuate pressure:

The cycle of feeling anxious leading to feeling inadequate, which leads to greater pressure and the desire to be brilliant, which again leads to feeling inadequate.

To break the cycle and avoid burnout, make use of our mindfulness exercises and the self-help apps listed in our tips for wellbeing.
