Doors open at York’s evening university

Posted on 14 September 2009

Inspiring more people to discover the joy of learning is at the centre of a new venture bringing together a range of educational opportunities at the University of York.

The University of York in the evening will run four nights a week offering part-time and leisure courses at the University’s Alcuin College.

We hope that by bringing all our courses under one roof and making dedicated facilities available we will help even more people take the chance to broaden their horizons.

In addition to excellent teaching facilities, the College’s location gives students easy access to the University Library, the Borthwick Institute for Archives, a café-bar and free evening parking.

Lesley Booth, Head of Lifelong Learning, said: “The University has a longstanding record of success in encouraging people to further their education or pursue new interests through a range of part-time courses.

“We hope that by bringing all our courses under one roof and making dedicated facilities available we will help even more people take the chance to broaden their horizons.”

The University of York in the evening brings together a wide variety of part-time courses offered across the University, some leading to university credit and others which can be taken purely for pleasure.

New courses this autumn include archaeology, psychology and drama alongside longstanding favourites such as creative writing, history and languages. The majority are open to all, regardless of previous qualifications.

Christopher Emberton, who regularly takes part in the University’s part-time programmes, said: “I have always enjoyed the courses offered by the University. Giving them a dedicated home in Alcuin College will provide part-time students with great opportunities, not only to learn but also meet people and be part of the wider University community. “

Anyone interested in finding out more about the courses available at the University of York in the evening, should call the Centre for Lifelong Learning on (01904) 328473 or go to the website at www.york.ac.uk/evening.
