Kazakhstan 2010

Kazakhstan is attracting the attention of many world Universities. The combination of a rapidly expanding economy, a relatively small domestic HE sector and a generous government backed sponsorship scheme means that very good students from Kazakhstan are applying to study in many of the world’s top Universities
At the end of September, three staff from York College, The University of York International Office and The York Management School (TYMS) travelled to Kazakhstan to attend two recruitment fairs for British Universities organised by the Kazakhstan Education Agents Association, in Astana and Almaty. We were also lucky enough to meet York Alumni and current TYMS students, one of whom arranged a brief sightseeing tour of Almaty.
The built environment in Astana, the newly created capital city is very impressive, with many statement buildings by international architects such as Norman Foster. Almaty is the commercial capital and largest city. It is in a beautiful setting in the shadow of the snow-capped Tien Shan Mountains, with the ski jumps built for the 2011 Asian Winter games prominent in the hills above the city.
