Professor Kathleen Kiernan and her colleague, Dr Fiona Mensah, have been awarded the British Educational Research Journal's prize for the paper of the year (2011 volume). Their article, Poverty, family resources and children’s educational attainment: the mediating role of parenting, used data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study to show the extent to which episodic and more persistent poverty in early childhood and the lack of other family resources disadvantage children at the start of their school careers in terms of whether they have achieved the target indicator of 'good level of achievement' on the Foundation Stage Profile.
The article is published in the British Educational Research Journal, (37)2, April 2011, pp. 317–336.
