What makes the Department of Education at York special?

We are widely recognised in the UK and beyond as a leading department in the field of education with a national and international reputation for the excellence of our degree programmes and research.

Our research

In the government’s 2008 Research Assessment Exercise we were rated in the top ten of education departments. Our research focuses on language education, science education, and education and social justice. We also have strong links with the Institute for Effective Education and the National Science Learning Centre, both of which are located on the University campus.

Our teaching

At York you will receive a high quality education from a world top 100 university located in one of the most beautiful and historical cities in England. Our degree programmes were rated ‘excellent’ in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment exercise and our teacher training course was judged as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. The Department was ranked 9th nationally for Education in both The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 and The Guardian University Guide 2011.

In the most recent National Student Survey our students expressed high levels of satisfaction for the quality of our teaching, academic support and organisation and management, placing us in the top 10 of UK education departments in these categories. We offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in an open and supportive environment that encourages frequent interaction between staff and students, and individualised personal supervision.
