York Festival of Ideas 2017 runs from 8th June to 16th June. There are several events which may of interest to YARN members.

Exhibition: Genders of Indian Music

Inspired by the image of Shiva and Shakti (Parvati) as one body – half-man half-woman – this exhibition explores the qualities men and women have brought to the evolution of Indian music. Presented by the Asian Music Circuit, it covers subjects including divine and human musicians, how music is seen as feminine and masculine, and the influence of colonisation and globalisation.

The exhibition can be found in the Ron Cooke Hub, University of York. It runs from 8th June to 16th June, opening times are available on the website.

Event: Music Beyond Borders

Join Amrit Kaur Lohia, a sarangi player and vocalist in the genres of Punjabi folk, jazz and soul, as she explores ‘music beyond borders’. Through music written for women by women, and beginning with pre-partition Punjab, she tells stories of partition and the violence women experienced in 1947. The set features a sarangi instrumental, Punjabi folk songs and the poetry of acclaimed Punjabi writer, Amrita Pritam.

There will be two performances on 16th June: 18.00 to 18.30, and 19.00 to 19.30. They will be held at the Ron Cooke Hub, University of York.

Exhibition: People in Changing Places: Images from Urbanising Asia

Richard Friend (Environment Department) presents an exhibition running throughout the festival, offering a series of images from across Thailand, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Vietnam and Myanmar. This exhibition addresses the theme of people in the face of rapid change, relevant as Asia experiences dramatic social and environmental change, most evident in the pace and intensity of urbanisation.

Richard explores some of the challenges of the tension between tradition and modernity, as people try to find their place in this new urban landscape.

This exhibition will take place in Fossgate cafes, restaurants and shops. No booking is required.
