Digital and Interactive Media at York

Undergraduate degrees covering theory and practice

Digital and interactive media shapes so much of our lives. At York, we offer two undergraduate courses exploring the cultural impact and creative aspects of digital media.

Digital Media, Culture and Communication (BA) explores how digital media has changed how we live, interact, create and communicate. Interactive Media (BSc) gives you hands-on technical skills covering VR, AR, gaming, 3D environments, UI/UX design and web app development.

York is a UNESCO city of Media Arts, and part of the Creative Cities Network. Media innovation is at the heart of our city's continued evolution.

Every year, the School holds the Interactive Media Showcase to display the works of BSc Interactive Media students. The event showcases our projects, like virtual reality games, humanities projects, web designs, mobile apps, and more. It's a great opportunity for our work to be recognised by other students, staff, and visiting industry professionals. It's a great way to build professional connections!

Superb facilities
Depending on the modules you choose, you'll have access to our £30m media complex, based in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies. It includes a motion capture studio, computer labs, editing and postproduction suites, interactive media rooms and more.
Innovative research
The Department of Sociology is 1st for research impact and 4th in the UK for research overall according to the Times Higher Education’s ranking of the latest REF results (2021).
What I find is how relevant it is to everyday life. I’ll see things that I have been studying appear in the news or on social media. Areas of study feature topics that I would have conversations with family and friends about!
