International Ambassadors
Applications to be an International Student Ambassador close on Monday 5 October 2026.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- be a current international-fee-paying student
- be enrolled on any full-time course at the University of York
- live in the UK
- provide proof of your right to work in the UK
We are happy to take applications from students who are continuing their studies at the University of York in the next academic year.
New ambassadors will be required to attend an orientation and a campus tour training session and complete a GDPR course online.
Role activities
Your hours will be flexible, and allocated on a mutually-acceptable basis. Events can take place on weekdays, evenings and weekends, both during and outside of University semester time.
- Virtual events - sharing your experience about student life and answering questions from prospective students.
- Campus tours - showing prospective students and visitors around the campus and answering questions about the University.
- Creating digital content - writing blogs, creating vlogs, podcast recordings and content for social media.
- Administrative duties - data input and research tasks.
- The Ambassador Platform - supporting prospective students online via a live chat platform and at webinars.
- Offer Holder Engagement - posting in WhatsApp groups to assist Offer Holders with queries alongside a Regional Manager.
Role requirements
International Student Ambassadors should have a good understanding of the University's departments, courses, facilities and services (or be willing to learn). You should also:
- be proactive, enthusiastic and reliable
- be responsible, reliable and a good timekeeper
- have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to respond to sometimes challenging situations
- keep up-to-date with University information (news and updates)
- be able to work efficiently in a team and on own initiative
- be respectful towards individuals of all cultural backgrounds
- be diplomatic, friendly, approachable and enthusiastic
- enjoy working with a wide range of students, teachers, parents and career advisers
- be comfortable discussing all aspects of student life with the public in a clear and confident manner.
Skills you'll develop
- Communication skills: speaking confidently with prospective students, parents, visitors and university staff. Explaining information clearly and adapting communication style to different audiences.
- Confidence and interpersonal skills: becoming more comfortable approaching strangers, starting conversations and representing the University professionally.
- Teamwork: working alongside other student ambassadors and university departments to ensure the events run smoothly.
- Social and cultural awareness: interacting with prospective students from different countries and gaining a better understanding of the different experiences and perspectives.
- Time management and organisational skills: balancing ambassador shifts and events with studies, while arriving prepared and managing responsibilities independently.
- Problem-solving and resilience: dealing with unexpected questions or situations during tours and events and finding appropriate solutions.
- Content creation and digital skills: creating digital content, such as blogs, vlogs and social media content that is engaging, interesting and accessible.

Being an International Student Ambassador was a fantastic experience for me. It gave me the opportunity to get to know my environment much better than I would have otherwise. I was also able to meet new people and make new friends! As an added bonus, it made me some money and sure looks good on my resume!
