Generative AI - Staff guidance

The University encourages you to explore AI tools and consider how you may use AI to facilitate teaching, learning and assessment in your field.

Current advice is to only sign up for AI tools with your own personal account and not to use these tools to process university data, especially students’ assessments, such as the use of automated marking or AI detection tools.

The University is considering institutional licences for AI tools which staff and students can use. Core technologies we hold licences for, including Google Workspace and Blackboard, will have generative AI functionality in future releases.

The University Teaching Committee and the Standing Committee on Assessment have special working groups who are coordinating policy and guidance on AI use for teaching, learning and assessment.

There are a number of AI interest groups in schools/departments and faculties who are exploring the use of tools. We encourage you to get involved with these groups to share knowledge and good practice.

We recommend you:

  • Stay informed on institutional and school/department policy and guidance
  • Keep students informed of expectations at module and assessment level
  • Experiment with AI tools and have open dialogue with students and colleagues
  • Reflect on programme learning outcomes and module assessments in the context of AI
  • Avoid uploading personal/sensitive/copyrighted material to generative AI
