We all absorb information in a variety of ways, and often different techniques prove more useful depending on the topic in question. However, using a range of techniques can keep our learning varied and help us retain that information over time!

We hope this page inspires you to try some new learning techniques. Most importantly, we would encourage you to reflect on what works best for you - it’s a great opportunity to trial some new learning and study techniques to help you consolidate your learning and help you remember new concepts going forward.

Top tip!
It can be really useful to make connections between previously acquired knowledge (what we already know) and the new information we are trying to learn. Think of it like building blocks - you’ll be revising your ‘foundations’ at the same time, and information recall at intervals over time is one way of transferring knowledge from your short-term to long-term memory.

Learning techniques

Below you can find some learning strategies, some of which may be familiar to you. We’d encourage you to try one or two new ones, and then reflect on whether they work for you!

  • Change up your style - use different fonts, colours and highlighters to make important information stand out!
  • Use visual aids - have you tried posters, mind maps, flashcards and drawings/diagrams?
  • Think about the format - what about watching videos, condensing your notes, using mnemonic devices and rhymes?
  • Listen up - have you thought about using podcasts, doing a Q&A with friends, having discussions and recording voice notes?
  • Pool that knowledge - have you tried teaching a friend, revising in groups or acting out a role play?
  • Make it interactive - use case studies/examples, look at samples or maybe even use a stress ball if that helps you concentrate.
  • Write it out - how about lists, bullet points, writing definitions and rewriting your notes?
  • Let’s repeat - whether it’s outloud or rewriting your notes, make sure you keep going back to check how much you have remembered… and then each time retain a little more!
