Payment for public involvement in research rate increase

From Tuesday 16th December, the National Institute of Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) involvement pay rate increased by 10%.

This increase applies to all NIHR funded involvement activity from this date. A table of the exact amounts (with increase) is available on the NIHR web pages, under the Annex 1 Involvement in wider NIHR activities section.

Please note that NIHR rates for expenses for involvement and remote working payments remain the same and are not increasing.

The increase does not apply to research participants, to community organisations or to other funders or organisations. For more information look at the NIHR web pages for Public Contributor Reward and Recognition Policy.

Current NIHR award holders using the NIHR involvement payment rate should contact the relevant NIHR programme team if they need support and advice about how to cover these extra costs from 16th December - for example, considering a redistribution of costs within the non-staff costs of the project budget. It is an important principle of this uplift that the level of involvement planned should not need to be reduced.

If you have questions concerning the increase please contact the Public Partnership team at NIHR: publicpartnerships@nihr.ac.uk

The University will be increasing its suggested rates for payment for involvement in line with the NIHR and in accordance with good practice in this area. The information on the University website will be updated accordingly.

Payment guidance for researchers and staff is on the Involvement@York online Resource Library, in the Reward and Recognition section. This is accessible through the Involvement@York web page

From NIHR:
The NIHR payment rate for involvement has been the same since 2009. The decision to increase the rate followed a long period of reflection and consultation with various internal and external stakeholders, and consideration of different options for change. It has also been agreed that NIHR will review (but not necessarily increase) the rate every three years. This is just one of the ways we are honouring our strategic commitment to improving the reward and recognition of public contributors.
