Understanding Modern Fascism

Tuesday 6 June 2017, 2.00PM to 5.00pm

Speaker(s): The panel will be chaired by Signy Gutnick Allen

The resurgence of the European far-right, concerns about Trump and recent changes in the rhetoric of immigration and integration have led to a renewed interest in the concept of fascism - how can we define the term and can it be applied to help us understand current political developments?

The discussion will feature six speakers from a range of disciplines:

  • Nigel Copsey - Co-director of the Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist studies, University of Teeside
  • Hannah Malone - Lumley Junior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, University of Cambridge
  • Anthony Ince - Lecturer in Human Geography, University of Cardiff
  • Ash Sarkar - Writer and Senior Editor, Novara Media
  • Matthijs Gardenier - Lecturer in Sociology, Université Paul Valéry Montpellier III
  • Ben Chwistek - Doctoral Candidate in Political Theory, University of York

There will be a roundtable discussion, refreshments, and then a Q&A with the audience putting questions to the panel.

The event is open to staff and students and is free with no booking required.
