On migration & refugees in Malaysia. On being a human rights activist.

Monday 25 January 2016, 1.00PM

Speaker(s): Katrina Jorene Maliamauv, Tenaganita (Malaysia)

Drawing from her experiences growing up around activism, and in her work at the Malaysian human rights organisation Tenaganita, Katrina Jorene Maliamauv will share stories of migrants and refugees she's worked with directly, and will speak about her and her colleagues' work defending refugee rights, challenging the criminalisation of migrants and working to end various forms of modern-day slavery.

Katrina Jorene Maliamauv worked for the past seven years as a human rights activist in Malaysia. As a programme officer for Tenaganita, she works to uphold and defend the rights of migrants, refugees and other marginalised communities. She advocates for and intervenes on labour rights, arrest and detention, gender-based violence, and an intersectionality of issues and rights. She has a BSc in Psychology, and as a Chevening Scholarship recipient, she just completed a Master's degree in Applied Human Rights from the University of York. She is a feminist, a believer in the power of hope, radical love, and collective action to reimagine and create a more inclusive, just and equal world for all.
