Culture and politics in Africa - workshop

Friday 12 June 2015, 9.45AM

This one-day workshop will explore the interaction between cultural creativity and politics in Africa. Through discussions of cultural works such as novels, poetry, theatre, film and music, it will examine key questions concerning the relationship between the state and political movements, on the one side, and the autonomy of people involved in cultural projects, on the other.

  • How does politics in Africa strengthen, shape or restrict cultural expression?
  • In what ways do cultural works influence emotional and intellectual attitudes about politics?
  • Under what conditions are states able to persecute cultural producers and restrict their work?
  • How can culture facilitate the development of an autonomous civil society and strengthen democratic movements?

Contributions welcome, please send proposals to Professor Allison Drew by 15 May.
