MSc Fusion Energy Bursaries
We’re pleased to offer four bursaries for students studying the MSc Fusion Energy in 2025/26.
This bursary is supported via the FOSTER programme.
The aim of this bursary scheme is to improve the diversity of the fusion workforce. We particularly encourage bursary applications from applicants who identify as women, who are underrepresented within the MSc Fusion Energy course.
Please note that to be considered for this bursary you must have a conditional or unconditional offer to study the MSc Fusion Energy at the University of York starting on 15th September 2025.
These bursaries are designed to support students with living costs.

This is a competitive process. Bursary applications will be assessed by a panel of University of York staff based on:
- the applicant’s interest in fusion energy and understanding of its societal importance,
- the panel’s evaluation of the personal statement provided,
- the extent to which the applicant meets this bursary scheme’s priority under-represented characteristics.

If a student is unable to take up their place on the course in September 2025, or withdraws before the first bursary instalment, their bursary award will be cancelled.
Bursaries will be paid in three instalments of £3500, £3500 and £3000 in September, January and April respectively.
Bursary payments will be subject to a student’s continued registration at each instalment point. If a student’s registration on the MSc Fusion Energy ends prematurely, they will be ineligible for any remaining instalments.

This privacy notice is for applicants to the MSc Fusion Energy bursary scheme. It sets out the ways in which the University of York gathers, uses, stores and shares your data. Where do we get your data from?
We get the information directly from you when you submit the application form.
We will use the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) database, based on the postcode you provide in the “About You” section of the application form.
What data do we have?
We collect information about you via the application form including your name and email address, as well as widening participation and special category data about you.
If you are offered bursary funding, we will also collect bank details and other payment information to allow us to administer the scheme.
What is our legal basis for processing your data?
Typically, data will be processed:
- on the grounds of contractual requirement or to take steps to enter into a contract, eg to deliver the bursary scheme.
- because it is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest,
- because you have given your consent or, in the case of special category data, your explicit consent,
- because we have a legitimate interest to do so eg to better understand the effectiveness of this bursary scheme.
How do we use your data?
The information you provide is used by University of York to process your bursary application and make decisions about who to offer bursary funding to.
Anonymised information (application form responses without names or email addresses) will be shared with the panel deciding who to allocate funding to. The panel will be made up of members of staff from University of York. The panel will score your application, based on the information you provide and their evaluation of your personal statements.
Application, special category and widening participation data will also be statistically analysed and used to understand whether the bursary scheme is achieving its goals.
If you are successful, we will contact you for additional information (e.g. bank details and payment information) to allow us to administer the scheme.
Who do we share your data with?
This bursary scheme is supported via the FOSTER programme. We will share names and University of York email addresses of the bursary recipients with the FOSTER team at UKAEA. We will also share top level data with the FOSTER team at UKAEA, such as the number of applications, the scoring profile across the applications, and how we came to make decisions on allocating the bursaries.
