Rethinking how we protect the world’s mountain communities

Nearly half of the world’s population relies on resources that flow directly from mountain ranges - from clean drinking water and hydroelectric power to agriculture and biodiversity. Yet, these high-altitude landscapes are among the most vulnerable on Earth, sitting squarely on the front line of the climate crisis.
Existential threats
Glaciers are retreating at unprecedented rates, permafrost is thawing, and traditional mountain livelihoods - such as farming, fishing, and eco-tourism - are facing existential threats.
Now, a major global study published in the journal Cell Reports Sustainability argues that traditional research models are no longer enough. To safeguard these critical environments, scientists and decision-makers must stop reacting to climate shocks and instead embrace uncertainty as a tool for long-term resilience.
Historically, climate adaptation in mountain regions has relied on narrow, sector-specific predictions - often focusing on single issues. However, these models often fail to capture the complex web of environmental and human factors at play.
Drawing on 25 detailed case studies across 18 countries and five continents, the international study - funded by the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) and the French National Research Agency (ANR) - offers a fresh perspective.
Sustainable development
Rob Marchant, Professor of Tropical Ecology at the University of York and one of the co-authors on the study, said: "Mountains can be fundamental drivers of sustainable development with impact far beyond the mountain limits.
“By working closely with mountain communities, it is possible to get ahead of the multiple challenges that mountain systems are facing, particularly around changing climates, declining biodiversity and people’s livelihoods.”

"It calls for a fundamental shift: moving away from reactive responses and toward an anticipatory approach built on collective learning, local participation, and a deep recognition of uncertainty."
To bridge the gap between scientific theory and real-world policy, the research team identified five core principles designed to help communities anticipate change rather than merely react to crises. They are:
- Co-produce knowledge with local communities: bring researchers, policymakers, indigenous peoples, and local residents together from the outset to build solutions tailored to local realities.
- Bridge academic disciplines: Combine social and natural sciences with citizen science to better understand how human behavior and environmental shifts influence each other.
- Connect local actions to global scales: Ensure short-term economic and political decisions align with long-term environmental trends across borders.
- Plan for multiple scenarios: Move past "single-outcome" forecasts by building flexible strategies that account for economic shifts, power dynamics, and community self-determination.
- Embed anticipatory governance: Build public institutions that systematically use climate science and traditional ecological knowledge to make proactive decisions before disaster strikes.
Climate impacts
As climate impacts accelerate from the Andes to the Himalayas, the framework provides a practical tool for protected area managers, city planners, and government leaders worldwide.

By shifting the narrative from crisis response to forward-thinking resilience, the researchers hope to ensure that mountain ecosystems—and the billions of people who depend on them - can thrive in an unpredictable future.
