University of York Mumbai opens to students for its inaugural year

Following a two week induction to the University over the summer, students will now begin their studies across undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security, Business, and the Creative Industries.

The opening was celebrated at an event attended by the new academic and student community, partners from local business and industry, and both the Mumbai Provost, Professor Lindsay Oades and York’s Interim Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ken Badcock.

From the outset, the University is placing a strong emphasis on research targeting global issues, including food security, environmental change, and future technologies.

New research institute

Following the official opening this week, the University is also announcing a new research and policy institute focused on major global challenges including artificial intelligence, urbanization and climate change.

Professor Ken Badcock, Interim Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, said: “Today marks a major milestone. The launch of University of York Mumbai is the result of dedication and collaboration from our teams in India and the UK, our global partners, and the vibrant city of Mumbai itself. Thank you to everyone who helped turn our vision for research and education into a reality. 

“The opening of the University contributes to India’s policy of increasing its presence as a destination for international higher education, following recent government reforms allowing foreign universities to set up local branches.”

Partnerships

Provost for the University of York Mumbai, Professor Lindsay Oades added: “We aim to empower students to thrive in evolving industries by nurturing enquiring minds with a global outlook. Working together with partners locally, and our researchers in Mumbai and York, our students will access the skills they need to be creative, entrepreneurial leaders ready to tackle complex challenges across an interconnected world.

“It has been really exciting to see the beginnings of our community form, and the enthusiasm and drive we have witnessed from both staff and students in these early weeks has given us an insight into the many things we can create together in the future.”

Professor Bob Doherty, Director of Research for University of York Mumbai, and Professor Benjamin Poore, from the School of Arts and Creative Technologies, have begun their secondments to the University of York Mumbai. They will spearhead new industrial partnerships, research projects, public events and student learning opportunities. 

The University of York will announce further opportunities to collaborate across teams in York and Mumbai, including additional secondments, research programmes, and contributions to teaching and learning in the coming months.
